Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin founded the Frontera Fund in 2013, as a result of the settlement they got from the legal case that they won against the Maricopa County. The reason this settlement was rightly given to these two media journalists was because they were made victims of crimes against humanity where they were denied their first amendment rights by Joe Arpaio, the Sheriff of Maricopa County.
Although assigned the duty of protecting civilians, Joe Arpaio victimised Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin by having them arrested without a justified probable cause and then detailed them illegally, all as an act of vengeance as they had coined an article that led to the misdeeds performed by the sheriff against Latino people. The Frontera Fund was established as a means to help the Latino community in Arizona get justice while being protected against crimes done against humanity that result from racial profiling, discrimination, and segregation. This fund also supports various other groups that actively advocate civil rights as well as human rights of migrants.
Another notable organization that was founded on a noble cause is DACA. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Group has been actively focussing on helping youth immigrants that have migrated to the USA without documents.
The purpose DACA is engaging in providing documentation such as a social security number along with a driver’s license is to ensure that children that immigrated to the USA stay protected.
Most of these immigrants had come to the country with no choice in the matter, and DACA is hoping to give them an opportunity to make something of themselves by studying, working in the country while contributing to the economic development of the nation.
DACA was recently attacked by various extremist groups, such as members of the GOP, which led to a letter being created by nine attorney generals amongst other influential people. This written message was submitted to the Trump administration to ensure that the operations of DACA come to a halt and no more good is done for the immigrants who have recently come to the USA.
Due to this letter and the legal threats made by the participants, DACA has been forced to stop accepting new applications to help immigrant children who possibly have nowhere else to turn.
Despite these recent troubling events that have set back the civil and human rights movements of the country by decades, both the Frontera Fund and DACA are still set on doing as much good as they can in the time they have left.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin from the Frontera Fund will continue undoing the extreme damage Joe Arpaio has done over his lifetime, and they will also keep supporting other groups that believe in justice for everyone especially immigrants.
