George Soros is a liberal billionaire, who has great influence on American politics. Over the years, he has been supporting non-profit foundations. The prominent investor supports these groups through his Open Society Foundation (OSF). Mr. Soros has donated at least $33 million in one year to different established groups having grassroots membership and activists in Ferguson. According to OSF’s Director, Kenneth Zimmerman, the foundation is not accountable for the protests witnessed in Ferguson despite the activist groups being recipients of OSF’s funds. The Missouri event, which was supposed to be a one-day criminal protest, was quickly transformed into 24 hours of chaos. Zimmerman said that the Ferguson incident was a reflection of lack of accountability and democratic participation. He explained that since its inception, OSF has offered support to various groups with the objective of promoting accountability in both society and government through inclusiveness and democracy. However, he said that they lack control of what happens during the activism events like those experienced in Ferguson, Cleveland and Staten Island. George Soros was born in Hungary during the Nazi reign where he, together with his family, experienced hostility due to their Jewish heritage. They survived the regime that left over 500,000 Hungarian Jews dead by obtaining fake identities and helping others do so. George managed to flee to London in 1947 where he enrolled in London School of Economics. George Soros later moved to the US to venture into the lucrative financial industry where he started accumulating capital that enabled him to launch his own hedge fund, Soros Fund Management, in 1970. After a while, he established The Open Society Foundation with the objective of venturing into philanthropy. Having been a victim of human rights violation, he channels his support to groups that advocate for issues like justice and equality, freedom of expression, accountability in government and transparency. George Soros strives to protect the groups of people who are discriminated solely for who they are, including sex workers, LGBTI people and drug users. Presently, OSF operates in over 100 countries across the United States, Asia, and Africa. Know more on businessinsider.com about George Soros.
Dick DeVos has been featured in many business publications both for his ingenuity and investments, and also for his philanthropy that he recently decided to disclose during the confirmation hearings for his wife Betsy. Dick and Betsy have both been champions for private education in the state of Michigan and nationally, and the work they’ve accomplished in that arena led then President-elect Donald Trump to choose Betsy for Secretary of Education. Due to the pressing nature of confirmation hearings and the need for transparency, Dick and Betsy DeVos answered the longtime mystery of how much their lifetime charity has amounted to. The estimated amount disclosed totaled over $139 million.
Most of Dick DeVos’s $139 million has gone to private schools such as Potter’s House Christian School, Grand Rapids Christian Academy, and several other private K through 12 schools and even private colleges. The funding for these schools has gone through the Dick & Betsy DeVos Foundation and also through their Education Freedom Fund and Children First America. They also once tried to get a ballot initiative for tax credits and vouchers for private schools passed in the year 2000, but the Michigan voters did not approve. In 2010, the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation along with funding from their company The Windquest Group started a charter school with an advanced technology curriculum known as the West Michigan Aviation Academy.
Dick DeVos also made a donation to the Kennedy Center in Washington when billionaire David Rubenstein undertook the art institute renovation, and the DeVos’s gift of $22 million had it renamed in their honor. Other organizations he donated to include the Spectrum Health Foundation for which he won the Art of Giving award in 2006. The DeVos’s have also contributed to the Heritage Foundation and Hudson institute, and while the DeVos’s have been highly active in the Michigan Republican Party, only a small percentage of their lifetime giving has gone to political candidates.
Dick DeVos’s philanthropy is something his family has been known for including his father Richard DeVos Sr. who has started many social philanthropies from the profits made at Amway Corporation. Amway is a direct selling company that Richard DeVos Sr. cofounded with Jay Van Andel, and Dick and his brothers Daniel and Douglas have all served as executives at the company. Dick was an executive vice president from 1984 to 1989 and then took over as CEO in 1993. Dick and Betsy also founded The Windquest Group which owns many Michigan startups in retail, food service, energy and technology. Dick DeVos ran for governor in 2006 but came up short in that race, and in 2012 was part of a coalition that had a right-to-work law passed. Dick also authored the book Rediscovering American Values in 1998.

The family is known for all the good reasons especially, how they have helped to better the lives of others. The way that they always look for innovative solutions to social problems has endeared them to many. They also are known for pursuing reforms through nonprofit roles. The Dick and Betsy Family Foundation has always been a leader when it comes to these roles.
The charity works and life of Dick DeVos
I started following Dick DeVos long before he ran for governor of Michigan. He served as Consumer Goods Distribution Company’s CEO from 1993 to 2002. He was listed as the 67th richest person in the United States. During his time as CEO of Consumer Goods Distribution Company, he was more focused on mentoring young professionals and introducing them to the corporate world. To date, thousands owe their social standings to DeVos.
He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In his early days, he went through the Forest Hills public school system. At Northwood University, he studied business administration. He later went to Harvard Business School and Wharton School. His pursuit of more education and an incredible career also saw him spend time at the Central Michigan University and Groove City College. By the time he was through with these studies, he had already earned recognition as a businessman and humanitarian. He Married Betsy, a former chairperson of the Michigan Republican Party.
DeVos became the CEO of Orlando Pirates, an NBA outfit that his family acquired in 1991. He then left Orlando Pirates to succeed his father as the chief executive officer of Amway in 1993. He is credited with overseeing a significant restructuring of this company to make it much better than his father left it. He also is known for providing private scholarships to students through the Education Freedom Fund, a trust that he co-founded with his wife. Throughout his life, he has been at the center of many success stories including the “Kids First! Yes!” campaign to which he was a co-chair.
