Eric Lefkofsky and Tempus

According to the National Cancer Institute, 14.5 million people in the United States were living with cancer in 2014. With that number expecting to jump to up to 19 million in 2024, Tempus and its co-founder Eric Lefkofsky are hoping to innovate data-enabled medicine.

After his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, Eric Lefkofsky saw the issues with how healthcare handled collecting data and technology. With lots of data collected from patients and their treatments, this data has not streamlined well enough to be able to make proper use of it.

With Tempus, a patient’s molecular and clinical data can be analyzed to be more affordable and accessible. Usually, patient notes are kept with the physician. Since they don’t often contain text, it’s harder to analyze. Tempus has developed a software that intends to process the information through natural language processing and character recognition.

Tempus also hopes to promote the use of genomic sequencing. With it, cancer researchers can be able to find ways to fight cancer in a more effective and easier way. In the future, Tempus also plans to help cancer patients find doctors offering treatments.

About Eric Lefkofsky

Before becoming involved with Tempus, Eric Lefkofsky attended law school at the University of Michigan. He created several companies with his friend Brad Keywell, including promotional product company Starbelly, print company InnerWorkings and freight logistics company Echo Global Logistics. He founded Groupon (which started out as ThePoint) in 2007 and became the CEO. He stepped down from the position and kept his role as the Chairman.

Eric Lefkofsky is involved with other organizations in philanthropy. In 2006, he and his wife Elizabeth founded the LefkofskyFoundation, that intends to support science and education-related causes worldwide. He is on the board of directors at the Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
